GROUP DYNAMICS

Good group dynamics means balanced participation from your team members: ideally, no one person will dominate the discussion, and no one will be completely disengaged. This is critical in management meetings; since each person represents one part of the organization and one part of the resources, the withdrawal or shutting out of one person equates to the removal of one whole section of the organization.

In reality, some people are more verbal than others, and levels of interaction vary. It’s not uncommon for one person to do most of the talking while someone else seems completely distracted. Such situations can—and should—be addressed by someone playing a facilitative role in the meeting. The leader, or any member designated as the facilitator, can actively redirect conversation from those who are more verbal to those who are more withdrawn. But to put all the responsibility on one leader or facilitator is to absolve everyone else of his or her own responsibility. In reality, maintaining balanced participation is everyone’s job.
